Life at the edge of the world
In the Yamal Peninsula, in the remote north of Siberia, beyond the Arctic Circle, live the nomadic population of the nenets, the shepherds of the tundra. In this remote and inhospitable corner of the world, life is really difficult, in winter the extreme temperatures in these lands can reach -50 ° These lead a life linked to centuries-old traditions after, season after season, ancient migratory routes with their herds of reindeer on which their existence depends. The Nenets divided into small groups of two or three families, generally related to each other, with which they belong a herd. Here social activities are concentrated in and around the Chum, the traditional tent made of wooden poles and reindeer skins, which can be assembled and disassembled in a few hours. According to old ritual customs, women take the place of the House, while men think of reindeer and their survival.
Vita ai confini del mondo
Nella penisola di Yamal, nel remoto nord della Siberia, oltre il circolo polare artico, vive la popolazione nomade dei nenets, i pastori della tundra. In questo angolo sperduto ed inospitale del mondo la vita è davvero difficile,in inverno le temperature estreme in queste terre possono raggiungere i -50°. Questi conducono una vita legata a tradizioni secolari seguendo, stagione dopo stagione, antiche rotte migratorie con le loro mandrie di renne dalle quali dipende la loro esistenza.
I Nenets vivono suddivisi in piccoli gruppi di due o tre famiglie, generalmente imparentate tra loro, con le quali condividono una mandria. Qui le attività sociali si concentrano all’interno ed intorno al Chum, la tenda tradizionale composta da pali di legno e pelli di renna, che si monta e smonta in poche ore.
Secondo vecchie usanze rituali le donne si occupano della Casa, mentre gli uomini pensano alle renne ed alla loro sopravvivenza.
